Reducing Exposure To Allergy Triggers

Dust mites, pollen, mold and animal dander oh my! For anyone that happens to deal with allergies these four items that I have mentioned are your usual suspects for the cause of your problems. There are of course allergies to foods as well for some people but for this post I wanted to focus on those main four that I listed there and what you can do to be pro-active for your own allergy relief.

I felt the need to discuss this topic today because I myself have been dealing with an allergy flare up over the last few days. The two triggers that seem to attack my sinuses the most are the animal dander and pollen. Admittedly the exposure I have to animal is of my own doing as we have three dogs and a cat in the house. Fortunately over the years the effects of the danders from animals has become less of an issue over time. I guess my immunity strength has built up over the years due a pretty constant exposure to animals. I loves me pets ;-)

As a side not I have picked up on the fact that my allergies seem to gain more strength when I increase the amount of dairy into my diet. I eat a good bowl of ice cream and I can pretty much guarantee that my nose and eyes will be acting up the next day, just thought I would share that little tip. At least it has been my experience that the diet I follow play an important part in how sensitive my system seems to be to those four allergy triggers.

OK lets get down to listing a few of those do it yourself tasks that you can do around the house that will cut down on your exposure to those pesky things you are allergic to.

To start with examine your cleaning routine for your house. Does your vacuum have an allergen filter on it? Most of them do now a days so if your vacuum is from the stone age than odds are it would be in your health’s best interest if you purchased a new one. Before you do vacuum your house do you do the dusting first?

Dusting what is that :roll: yes you need to dust everything down and work from the top down so you can increase the effectiveness of your vacuuming in getting the most dust mites and pollens out of your house. Last but not least if the dust mite thing is the stuff that really sets off your allergies then best that you wear a dust mask while you do your house cleaning.

Here is something that we have been doing in our home for about ten years now. We take our “outside” shoes off as soon as we come in the house. Fortunately our home is set up where the pantry is right where the you come in the house through the garage so we have a couple of shoe buckets for the family to kick off the shoes so we don’t track in more stuff from the outside. Hey every little bit helps especially when it comes to keeping your lungs, nose, ears and eyes clear.

Another good tip that does cost a bit of money but seems to help a lot of people from what I have seen in some health and asthma forums is keeping a dehumidifier in the house. Especially in the room that you sleep in so you can get a restful allergy free sleep. Also be sure to replace the air filters on your air conditioning unit every four months or so depending on cost of course. I know some of these things can run you a pretty penny but I would prefer to run these things then to be stuck taking the latest allergy drug. They work fine I suppose but I am all about the natural alternatives to keeping my allergies in check.

Alright here is my last tip for this post. Take a shower or bath if you prefer at the end of your day before you go to bed. The reason being that you have most likely been outside during your day well guess what you have all kinds of dust mites and pollens stuck to your clothes, skin and hair and if you don’t wash those off before bed then you are just going to bring that stuff right with you while you sleep. Oh isn’t that a pleasant thought all kinds of dust mites, pollen, mold and animal dander in your bed, oh my 8-O so much for all your efforts to reduce your exposure to allergy triggers.
