Environmentally Safe Drug Disposal Programs

There are movements and go green groups all over the world pushing some form or another of recycling or safe environmentally friendly disposal. With that in mind how do you think most people dispose of medicines and drugs that are expired or no longer needed? Well if you are like most people in the world we generally toss them in the garbage,  down the drain or flush them down toilet.

The problem with all three of these way of getting rid of expired drugs is that they are now showing up in trace amounts and coming back to us in our environment. Mostly showing up in our drinking water which is being documented more and more as time goes by. What also worries me is that it’s not just our drinking water. The animals and vegetables we eats are also being exposed this expired drug cocktail. Granted these are trace amounts that they are finding but over time the long term exposure can’t be a good thing for anyone.

Where there´s Muck, there´s BrassThe best solution to this problem that I just recently read about is in the works of becoming a law in the US at least from the state of Washington. Rep. Dawn Morrell from Washington is pushing legislation that will make the pharmaceutical companies responsible for funding programs to dispose of all the drugs that they are making. I think this is a no brainer in terms of environmental responsibility being placed upon the companies making money from all the drugs they are producing to be responsible for the safe disposal of them as well.

I hope this becomes the standard worldwide and we see an end to all these pharmaceutical drugs ending up mixed together in some crazy drug cocktail in our water and food supplies. What are your thoughts on the safe disposal of pharmaceutical drugs? Do you think all these trace amounts of drugs being found in our water and food supply should be something we should be worried about? Or is it being blown out of proportion and being over hyped by the media?
