A Patients Welfare Or The Almighty Dollar

The search for the Minnesota mom and her cancer stricken son is all over the news right now. This has been an ongoing story that is unfortunately taken a drastic turn in the last few days. Now there is a nation wide man hunt for this mom and her son. I thought that the genesis of this story made for a good topic to write about concerning modern medicine and the perception a growing number amount of the general public have.

The perception of modern medicine that I am referring to is that feeling of a lack of trust in what doctors are telling us and prescribing to us. Also to go along with that the rise in popularity for alternative forms of medicine and a more natural way of healing our bodies. I think a lot of this evolved perception of not trusting modern medicine comes from how commercial and powerful the drug companies have become. For example when is the last time you watched TV for a good spell and did not see a commercial for some sort of drug that you should be taking? How far do you have to drive in your neighborhood to get to the closest CVS, Walgreens or some other drug store, the odds are not very far at all.

That’s my point, modern medicine has become large corporations that are out to make money! No longer is it about doctors and patients and treating what is ailing you now it’s about what new expensive drug can we prescribe for you. Back to that Minnesota family and their son that is fighting cancer. When their son was originally diagnosed with the cancer they went ahead with the doctors tactics which was to treat him with radiation and chemo therapy. All pretty standard practices now a days. Well after one round of this and nasty side effects that come along with it the family decided they were going to find an alternative treatment for the cancer. To make a long story short the doctors and now the state court system did not agree with the family and they were court ordered to continue on with the cancer treatments prescribed by the doctor. Which brings us up to know with the mom and son on the run because they believe so strongly in finding another way to save her sons life.

I honesstly don’t get where the doctors and the government now have the right to step in an demand that you take a medicine or go through with a medical procedure. I get the fact that we are dealing with the life of a child but he does have from all accounts that I have read two loving and reasonable parents and I don’t see why their rights as parents are being trumped by the doctors. Just because they say that their drugs, radiation and procedures are the best chance for his survival doesn’t make it the absolute right way and certainly not the only way. I mean we are still living in the land of opportunity and the land of freedom of choice if I am not mistaken this is happening in the US. It’s not like the parents are trying to ignore the illness on the contrary they are doing everything they can to save their child, why should they be stopped from pursuing that? Just because it goes against what doctors of modern medicine think? The fact that this case has gone to the courts and now government resources are being wasted on all this should be a big flashing neon sign that there is something seriously wrong with health care system and their perspectives on helping their patients welfare for their benefit not for the almighty dollar.
